Anna Kate's Little House on the Prairie Birthday!

For our kindergarten history studies this year we have been reading through the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Anna Kate has also been studying this time period through her monthly historical girls club with our homeschool group. She (and Caroline and Eleanor) have loved playing "Mary and Laura and baby Carrie", so it was only natural that Anna Kate wanted a Little House party for her birthday!

We have a little community building by the lake in our neighborhood, and Anna Kate thought it would be a perfect place for a Little House party. We decorated the outside with her birthday banner that I made for her first birthday and that we've used each year!

We used our Little House books and Kirsten doll as decorations for the inside.

We set up "Anna Kate's Mercantile and General Store"

And an area for the girls to make no-sew rag dolls.

Refreshments included cheese and crackers, apples, and popcorn. Authentic prairie food! And instead of cake, we served Blueberry Cobbler!

We took a few family pictures before everyone arrived.

We were glad Mimi and Papa were able to join us!

When the girls first arrived, they decorated brown paper bags to use as shopping bags at the mercantile where they used pennies to by candy, beads, ribbons, pencils, etc.

After that, we started working on our rag dolls.

Here are the finished products!

Then (despite near freezing temperatures), it was time for a few outdoor games.
Like three-legged races.

And hula-hoop rolling!

We went inside to sing Happy Birthday and eat blueberry cobbler, and then we read the chapter about Laura's 5th birthday in Little House in the Big Woods.

It was such a fun afternoon!

When we went back home, Mimi and Papa wanted to hear Anna Kate play on her new violin (along with Caroline)! The girls looked pretty cute in their little house dresses with violins :)
