First Dentist Appointment

Anna Kate visited the dentist for the first time last week!  It was actually just Mommy's check-up/cleaning, but they suggested I bring Anna Kate to see what the dentist is all about before she has her first cleaning when she turns 3.  I wasn't sure what she would think about everything, but she did great!  After sitting quietly and watching as I had my teeth cleaned, she was ready to hop right in the chair.  She let both the hygienist and the dentist poke around in her mouth and check her teeth.  Here is a picture of my big girl.

They also let her try on some cool sunglasses when they turned on the big light!  She thought she was pretty special, let me tell you!

I can't believe how much my baby girls is growing up!

Nine Months Old!

Sweet Baby Caroline, you are 9 months old today!  Three-quarters of a year!  It's hard to believe that we're halfway through summer and your October birthday is just around the corner.  You are growing up so fast, right before our eyes, and it seems like you are changing and doing something new each day!

~ This month you are REALLY crawling and on the move!  You still occasionally slide on your tummy because you're pretty fast that way, but most of the time you're up on hands and knees.
~ You are now pulling up to standing on just about anything you can crawl up to (coffee table, playroom chairs, dollhouse, stairs, etc.)
~ Speaking of stairs, you are just starting to want to crawl up the three steps up to the landing.  In fact, Daddy's in trouble for this one because he was watching you for 30 minutes yesterday while I taught a violin lesson and in that 30 minutes he taught you to pull up on the first step and try to climb up.  You had never noticed the stairs or been interested in them at all until that!
~ You said your first word this month: Da da!  You don't say it consistently yet, but it was a very clear "Da Da" and we hear it every couple of days.
~ You have become very vocal this month and are always "talking".  You have figured out lots of different consonant sounds and like to join in every conversation.  You also have this high-pitched squeal that you like to do a lot!
~ You really have started to enjoy playing in the playroom lately.  I can just sit you in there while I work in the kitchen and you have a great time pulling toys out and playing.
~ We have let you try a much wider variety of foods this month and you seem to enjoy most of them, but only a few bites at a time and then you lose interest.  I think so far we have tried applesauce, sweet potatoes, carrots, avocados, bananas, peaches, watermelon, and black beans. Oh, and you really like to share Mommy's hummus at lunchtime!
~ While you think these foods are kind of fun to play around with, you still want your primary source of nourishment to be nursing!  You are still wanting to nurse 6-8 times a day (plus a few in the middle of the night...)
~ Speaking of nights, we have had a couple of good ones in the last month, but you still have yet to become the wonderful sleeper that I am hoping you will one day be!  You go to bed fairly easily around 8pm, but then usually wake up every 2-3 hours until we're up for good around 7am.
~ You take two great naps during the day which is nice!  Usually from 9-10:30am and then from 1-3pm.
~ You still just have your two front bottom teeth, but I can see the white of one of your top teeth about to pop through!
~ You must have hit a growth spurt this month because every time I look at you, you just seem bigger!  You have definitely outgrown all your 9 month clothes and are wearing all 12-18 month outfits.
~ You have become very giggly this month.  You just laugh and laugh when we do things like play peek-a-boo, or sing silly songs, or tickle you!
~ You are starting to get a little bit more hair on your sweet baby head!  It's getting a little bit lighter in color, and it's hard to tell, but it seems to maybe have just a tiny bit of curl in it.  Not sure how you could have curly hair with how straight your mommy and daddy's hair is, but we'll see!
~ You have been really interested in books lately.  Not so much reading them (although, you will listen to stories sometimes!), but holding them, and pulling them out of the basket, and knocking over stacks of them!  I am just glad you like books...hopefully you will be an avid reader one day!
~ You love playing with Anna Kate's baby doll and she's usually very good about sharing her with you.  You love to give her slobbery kisses all over her face.  You have a little cloth baby doll of your own, but I think we may need to get you a big girl baby soon!
~ You have decided that you really like riding on Mommy in the Ergo lately.  You have always liked it, but you seem to really enjoy it now.  Which I love because it makes it so easy to go grocery shopping, to the farmers market, on walks, etc.!
~ I know I am your Mommy, so of course I think this, but you are such a pretty baby!  You just have the perfect little baby doll face!  And it is so kissable!

Caroline Hope, the joy that you have brought to our lives in just these past nine months is amazing.   We love you more and more each day!

Sweet snuggles

Caroline had a rough night of sleep Saturday night.  Not sure why...I thought maybe teething (that's often the answer, isn't it?!), but she didn't seem to be in pain.  She just couldn't sleep.  Unless she was being held.  And not as in snuggled in the bed, but as in someone needs to be sitting upright and holding me.  So she and I spent most of the night on the couch downstairs.  Around 6am she started waking up for good and I knew that I still had another 30-45 min before Anna Kate would wake up and before I needed to start getting ready for church.  So I asked Luke if he would come down and play with Caroline while I slept a little bit.  I fully intended to just sleep until 6:45 or so, but didn't wake up until 8 (we have to be at church between 8:30-8:45)!  Anyway, I rushed downstairs and this is what I found.

That little stinker apparently went right back to sleep when her daddy held her.  Even laying down!  He's definitely going to be the one who snuggles her the next time she has a rough night!

P.S.  For the record, we did get to church on time, amazingly enough!

A Visit from Cousin Leah!

And Uncle Stephen and Aunt Rachael, of course!  Oh, and baby on the way, too!

We had a great weekend spending time with Stephen and Rachael and Leah as they headed back to FL from their house-hunting trip in Norfolk.  Anna Kate talks about Leah all the time and was so excited to have her come and visit.  She really wanted to take her to EdVenture, so we spent Friday morning there.  The girls had a great time!  They have so many neat activities that are auditory and tactile, so Leah could join in on the fun too.

Sweet cousins driving the tractor

Leah the firefighter!

I know this isn't a super high-quality picture, but they had a new exhibit called "Timbuktu" that had a green room where you could play drums to African music.   When you watched the TV screen, it looked like you were playing along with African dancers!  Leah and Anna Kate had fun making music together!

Speaking of music, Leah thought the recording piano in the music room was pretty cool!

And who doesn't love climbing and sliding?!?

Unfortunately, we didn't take many pictures the rest of the weekend, but we are looking forward to all being together again in just a couple weeks to celebrate Stephen's graduation from the University of Florida with his Ph.D. in Science Education!

Videos this week!

It has been SO hot around here lately that we have had to spend most of our days indoors.  And one thing that entertains Anna Kate inside is taking pictures and videos!  So we've been doing a lot of that.  I took a couple of videos of her the other day doing her catechism and Bible verses.

Also, Caroline has some exciting news to share!  She said her first word yesterday - Da da!  And she kept saying it over and over again so I was able to catch it on camera.  And pardon Luke's sleepy look...he just woke up from a Sunday afternoon nap!

4th of July!

I know I'm a little late, but I do have some fun 4th of July pictures to share!  We had a great day with great friends!

We were so excited to have our friends the Kayles to our home for lunch.  Christy and I were best friends in high school and then our husbands ended up both going to Southeastern, so we were able to spend a great year together in seminary learning how to be new mommies together!  Mike spent 6 weeks at Ft. Jackson near Columbia completing training to be an army chaplain so we were able to see them on their way back to Wake Forest.

Here we are with all FOUR of our babies!  Brody (15 months), Logan (3 1/2), Anna Kate (2 1/2), and Caroline (8 months)

After they headed on their way, Anna Kate and Caroline went down for naps so they could rest up for more fun!  Our friends the Brennans joined us for chicken and veggie shishkabobs which Luke marinated and grilled to perfection!  Anna Kate helped me make this lovely fruit platter and was quite proud of her creation!

Here are our girls with the Brennans' little girls Alice (just 2 weeks older than AK) and Heidi (5 months).  Not super easy to get pictures of four baby girls age 2 and under, but we certainly tried!

Alice and Anna Kate

This one makes me laugh because AK is always "mothering" (aka bossing) Caroline.  Here she is trying to keep her from crawling away!

And these next few actually turned out decently!

After dinner we made a last minute decision to throw bedtime out the window and head to Sandhills to let all the little girls see the fireworks show!  After some initial uncertainty from Anna Kate, they all LOVED watching them!  We had a great time celebrating our freedom!
